Stand therefore…having put
on the breastplate of righteousness -- Ephesians 6:14 (NKJV)
The human trunk or torso is
home to some of the most vital organs in the human body. With the presence of
the heart, lungs, liver and a host of others, any damage to this area could, at
the very least, significantly limit the effectiveness of a warrior in combat or
– at the worst – prove fatal. Thus, the protection of the torso is important to
the combat-savvy soldier, both in the temporal and in the spiritual.
The description of
righteousness as a life-preserving breastplate helps us to understand just how
important right-doing is to the victorious Christian. Righteousness is
right-doing - plain and simple - and for us to have this protection we must
have a holy and righteous character, without any blemish. We must have a
spotless life’s record, devoid of even the slightest deviation from the
commands and statutes of Heaven.
Herein
lies the problem.
Going by my record and
yours, we don’t have such a character (Isaiah 64:6). We are all sinners (Romans3:23) and, as a result, have no protection for our spiritual vital organs
against the various assaults and accusations of the evil one (RH, February 13,1908 par. 12). Without help outside ourselves, the breastplate of righteousness,
victory and – consequently - Heaven would forever elude us. What now can be
done?
Thank God for Jesus!
